When I left the chief’s office that afternoon I was in no mood to return to my office, or to deal with the inevitable animus from Tracy, and probably Finkle too.

I also knew that the next meeting between me and the assistant chief would not be pleasant. The problem was, I didn’t quite know how I was going to deal with the slimy little bastard. Oh, I wasn’t afraid of him, nor did I intend to take any crap from him, but I also knew that I couldn’t allow the situation to continue. I either had to put a stop to it, or I had to go.

With those thoughts rattling around in my brain, I went to the lot and slid into my unmarked cruiser, then turned on the engine and just sat there, thinking. What the hell am I going to do?

I was exhausted. All I wanted to do that evening was take a shower and curl up in bed with a good book. The shower was easy enough. The book? Not so much. I just couldn’t concentrate, mainly because I had Finkle on my mind.

One thing I knew for certain was that the situation was intolerable. I knew him well enough to know that he was going to make life difficult for me, if not near impossible. It couldn’t be allowed to continue. Either he had to go or I did, and I didn’t plan on it being me. But how to handle it; that was the problem.

For more than an hour, I lay there, staring up at the ceiling, my brain in a whirl. It has to be something special, something that will get his attention... The next thing I knew the alarm was buzzing like an angry hornet. It was time to get up and face the day.
